George Stubbs, 'Mares and Foals in a River Landscape' painted in about 1763-8.
Stubbs's remarkable ability in painting horses was the result of lengthy study. This group is in fact a carefully constructed design. Remarkably, the composition was achieved by completing the horses first and then filling in the imaginary landscape around them.
