How to be a... Performance Artist

What is a performance artist? What do they do all day, and how do they make their art?

Performance art can be many different things, but it normally means that an artist uses their body as their paint and canvas. Performances can be planned or random. Artists can perform to the camera, to an audience or in a public space. It can be a bit unexpected and unusual but it should make you think!

Bruce Nauman is a performance artist who uses his body to explore space in a gallery. He made repetitive movements, which went on for hours! You can make your own art inspired by Nauman in a Tate Create.

Performance artists also use textiles, text, and other things combined with performance to make new types of art. Check out our series, Textiles Tryouts to see if you can even wrap up the moon!
